Ukraine Debuts ‘Sweetheart’ Drone

Ukraine’s defence technology sector has unveiled a new fixed-wing reconnaissance drone designed to deliver long-range intelligence gathering while reducing procurement costs for frontline units.

Developed by Ukrainian manufacturer General Chereshnya, the Sweetheart unmanned aerial system (UAS) is currently undergoing combat trials with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Serial production is expected to begin later this year following operational evaluation.

Built for deep reconnaissance missions

Sweetheart has been designed to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions well behind enemy lines. The aircraft is capable of operating at ranges of up to 150km, remaining airborne for approximately three hours, and flying at altitudes between 300 and 900 metres.

The fixed-wing platform weighs around 4kg and features a 1.7-metre wingspan, allowing it to be carried and deployed by a single operator. Unlike many comparable systems, it can be hand-launched without requiring a catapult or dedicated launch equipment, reducing deployment time and logistical requirements.

Designed to withstand electronic warfare

Recognising the increasingly contested electromagnetic environment on the modern battlefield, General Chereshnya says the drone has been engineered with enhanced resistance to electronic warfare (EW) and jamming systems.

The aircraft incorporates a digital video transmission link, an electro-optical camera with zoom capability, automatic target tracking and an integrated laser rangefinder to support target identification and battlefield observation.

According to the developer, Sweetheart also features a low acoustic signature, making it difficult to detect from the ground during low-altitude operations.

Lower-cost ISR capability

One of the programme’s primary objectives has been affordability. General Chereshnya says the Sweetheart system is expected to cost around one-sixth of many comparable reconnaissance platforms currently available.

The lower acquisition cost is intended to provide commanders with greater operational flexibility, enabling reconnaissance missions to be conducted without the financial constraints associated with higher-value unmanned systems.

Yaroslav Hryshyn, founder of General Chereshnya, said: “We set ourselves the task of creating a reconnaissance aircraft that would be affordable, easy to use, and at the same time capable of performing complex tasks deep in the enemy’s rear. That is exactly what our Sweetheart is.”

He added that the reduced cost could allow operators to undertake higher-risk missions where recovering the aircraft is considered less critical than obtaining valuable intelligence.

Supporting Ukraine’s expanding drone industry

Sweetheart forms part of a rapidly expanding Ukrainian defence technology ecosystem, where manufacturers continue to develop specialised unmanned systems tailored to operational requirements identified through frontline experience.

The new platform joins General Chereshnya’s wider portfolio of unmanned aerial systems and is intended to provide an affordable, long-range ISR capability for intelligence gathering in contested environments.

Combat testing is continuing in cooperation with Ukrainian military units, with serial deliveries anticipated to commence later in 2026, subject to successful completion of operational evaluations.
