UK Defence Secretary Issues Warning Regarding Russian Naval Activity

UK forces have intensified monitoring of Russian naval activity in waters close to the British Isles following a series of incidents involving the Russian intelligence-gathering vessel Yantar.

Multiple reports indicate that the ship has operated near UK territory, prompting warnings from the government and a sharp uptick in military surveillance.

Defence Secretary John Healey stated that the UK is fully prepared to respond to any incursions into British waters. He confirmed that the Government has activated military options to ensure the security of undersea infrastructure and to deter hostile behaviour by Russian vessels operating near strategic routes around Scotland.

The statement follows the detection of the Yantar moving through areas of interest to UK defence and energy assets.

The situation escalated when RAF crews tracking the vessel were targeted with laser activity believed to have originated from the Yantar. The UK has treated the incident as a hostile act that risks the safety of aircrew engaged in lawful surveillance operations.

RAF aircraft operating from Scotland and a Royal Navy escort were deployed to maintain continuous oversight of the vessel as it moved south.

The Yantar’s movements are consistent with previous Russian attempts to monitor or map undersea cables and critical national infrastructure. Defence sources quoted say the targeting of pilots with lasers represents a clear provocation intended to disrupt UK surveillance efforts.

The Ministry of Defence has not confirmed the exact location of the incident but stated that the UK will continue to track foreign vessels that pose potential risks to national security. Officials emphasised that NATO allies have also been informed, given the broader implications for regional maritime security.

Today’s developments underline increasing concerns that Russian naval units are testing the defences and response protocols of the UK and its partners. The Joint Expeditionary Force has already stepped up monitoring of shadow fleet activity, with the UK playing a leading role in coordinating data on suspicious vessel movements across northern Europe.

Although there is no indication that the Yantar entered UK territorial waters, the government maintains that it will respond firmly to any action that endangers personnel or infrastructure. Further surveillance operations remain underway.
