UK awards £3.16m contracts for drone interceptors

The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has awarded contracts worth £3.16 million to three British companies to develop a new generation of low-cost drone interceptors, becoming the first nation in a five-country European partnership to place industry contracts under the programme.

The funding has been awarded to Cambridge Aerospace, Frankenburg Technologies and Greenjets, which will each develop and trial interceptor concepts capable of defeating drones and other airborne threats at significantly lower cost than existing air defence systems.

The initiative forms part of the Low-Cost Air Defence Effectors (LCADE) programme under the broader European Long-range Air Defence Procurement (LEAP) initiative, which aims to accelerate the development and deployment of affordable air defence capabilities across participating nations.

Responding to the growing drone threat

The contracts come as armed forces continue to adapt to the increasing use of inexpensive unmanned aerial systems on the modern battlefield. Recent conflicts have demonstrated how mass-produced drones can overwhelm conventional air defence networks and force militaries to use high-value missiles against comparatively low-cost targets.

The new interceptor programme seeks to address this challenge by developing more economical solutions capable of engaging large numbers of drones while preserving more sophisticated missile systems for higher-value threats.

According to the MOD, the UK is the first of the five partner nations participating in LEAP to award development contracts, marking an important milestone in the collaborative effort to strengthen European integrated air and missile defence.

Supporting UK innovation and defence manufacturing

All three successful suppliers are UK small and medium-sized enterprises, with the programme expected to support highly skilled jobs and strengthen sovereign defence capability across the country. The development work will include design, prototyping and flight trials before progressing towards scalable production.

Alongside improving national resilience, the programme is intended to establish manufacturing capacity that can support future requirements across all five participating nations, enabling rapid production of affordable air defence systems as operational demand increases.

The contracts also reinforce the UK’s commitment to accelerating defence innovation through collaboration with industry, while ensuring armed forces have access to cost-effective capabilities capable of countering rapidly evolving aerial threats.
