Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and XTEND collaborate on UAS command and control

Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and autonomous systems specialist XTEND have collaborated to integrate XTEND’s Operating System (XOS) into Skunk Works’ MDCX autonomy platform, enabling simultaneous command and control of multiple classes of uncrewed aerial systems. The integration is designed to improve situational awareness and reduce operator workload during lower-level mission execution within joint all-domain command and control JADC2 environments.

The collaboration was demonstrated in November during a multi-class MDCX workstation trial supporting a marsupial drone mission. During the demonstration, a larger uncrewed aerial system deployed a smaller Class 1 UAS, which then conducted a close-in operational task. The scenario highlighted how a single operator could manage both platforms concurrently, rather than handing off control between different operators.

Under traditional operational constructs, control of smaller UAS platforms would typically be transferred to an operator trained on lower-level systems, using tools such as first-person views, mark-and-fly commands and immersive control environments. By integrating XTEND’s XOS into the multi-class MDCX architecture, Lockheed Martin has demonstrated the ability for one operator to conduct missions across multiple UAS classes without relinquishing control.

According to the companies, the demonstration showed a reduction in overall manpower requirements for complex missions, while also improving situational awareness across the mission space. Removing the need for handovers between operators is intended to streamline command chains, shorten data-to-decision timelines and support more responsive mission execution.

XTEND is known for its combat-proven drone command and control solutions, which are deployed by military forces globally. Its systems are designed to support layered operational responses and stepdown control processes, enabling UAS operations in contested environments, including scenarios where GPS signals are denied or radio frequency datalinks are disrupted. The XOS platform allows operators with limited experience to conduct missions at near expert-level proficiency, reducing training burdens while increasing operational effectiveness.

The two companies are now focusing on how the integrated MDCX and XOS capabilities can be applied more broadly to JADC2 missions, particularly in accelerating decision loops and supporting the advancement of autonomous and semi-autonomous systems across domains.

Skunk Works continues to prioritise piloted and uncrewed teaming concepts to enhance operational flexibility, improve pilot safety and enable rapid, informed decision-making in contested environments. The collaboration with XTEND forms part of Lockheed Martin’s wider investment in enabling technologies designed to address evolving and increasingly complex threat landscapes.
