Lib Dems Propose £10,000 Sign-Up Bonus to Bolster UK Military Forces

The UK’s Liberal Democrats have unveiled a proposal to introduce a £10,000 ($13,378) incentive for new military recruits, aiming to strengthen the British Armed Forces amid rising global tensions.

The plan, outlined by Lib Dem Leader Sir Ed Davey, is intended as a strategic response to growing threats such as international conflict, cyber-attacks, and the unpredictability of global figures like Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

Under the scheme, individuals enlisting in the military would receive the bonus after completing their initial training and committing to at least two years of service.

The proposal also includes a re-enlistment incentive, offering £20,000 ($26,749) to former service members willing to return for an additional two-year term.

This targeted initiative would apply to a maximum of 3,000 personnel, including both new recruits and returning veterans. Funding for the bonuses—totalling £60 million ($80.3 million)—would be drawn from the existing core defence budget.

Currently, entry-level salaries in the British Armed Forces range between £25,200 and £26,000 ($33,703 to $34,776) per year.

The proposal builds on a broader effort to retain and bolster military capacity. Last November, approximately 17,000 UK service members qualified for a separate incentive scheme offering up to £30,000 ($40,174) for extending their service by three years.

In a BBC interview, Davey emphasised that national preparedness extends beyond military bases.

“Readiness for conflict begins at home,” he said. “That’s why I’m also calling for a nationwide public awareness campaign to help every household in Britain be ready for threats—whether from armed conflict or large-scale cyber incidents.”

The initiative reflects growing concern over the UK’s defence posture in a volatile international landscape and underscores the Lib Dems’ commitment to enhancing recruitment and resilience.
