Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Berrechid, in Morocco’s Casablanca region, dedicated to the production of the Wheeled Armoured Platform 8×8 (WhAP 8×8).
The facility was officially opened by Shri Rajnath Singh, Honourable Defence Minister of India, alongside Mr Abdeltif Loudyi, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of National Defence Administration for the Kingdom of Morocco. Senior dignitaries from both governments were also in attendance.
This milestone represents the first overseas defence manufacturing plant established by a private Indian company, reinforcing India’s ability to design and deliver advanced combat vehicle platforms in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The initiative, supported by both the Government of India and the Kingdom of Morocco, underscores a shared vision for enhanced defence cooperation and technology exchange. It follows an investment agreement signed between the parties in September 2024, aimed at building Morocco’s industrial capacity within the defence sector.
According to the Maghreb Arabe Press (MAP), the project is intended not only to provide Morocco with greater industrial and technological autonomy but also to stimulate the development of an innovative defence ecosystem and create high-skilled employment opportunities.
At launch, the TASL plant will integrate 35% locally sourced components, with a target of reaching 50% through continued investment in training and supplier development. The Berrechid facility is expected to generate 90 direct and 250 indirect jobs, with production levels set to rise significantly over the medium term.
The plant will also provide Moroccan professionals with training and career opportunities in advanced defence manufacturing and maintenance, supporting skills development in critical technologies. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, it is designed to serve as a regional hub for the export of WhAP 8×8 vehicles, particularly across Africa, while supplying the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and other international markets.
This strategic partnership aligns with Morocco’s royal vision for establishing a sovereign national defence industry, strengthening security, and promoting South–South cooperation.
TASL, recognised globally for its defence expertise, cutting-edge technologies, and international reach, will drive the project forward while facilitating knowledge transfer and fostering local innovation, the company stated.
