The Swedish Government is investing SEK 500 million to strengthen ammunition supply security and expand domestic and European production capacity.
Announced by Sweden’s Ministry of Defence, the funding will support measures designed to reduce bottlenecks in ammunition supply chains and improve access to critical munitions during peacetime, crisis and war.
Defence Minister Pål Jonson said reliable access to ammunition across all levels of preparedness is an important national security interest, with Sweden seeking to establish more resilient supply arrangements both domestically and alongside other Nordic countries.
Funding Targets Ammunition Production
The investment will provide Swedish state co-financing for industry applications seeking support through the European Defence Industry Programme, or EDIP.
Under the programme, funding is expected to support increased European production capacity for propellants, explosives and other critical ammunition components.
Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration has assessed proposed projects according to their ability to address production shortages affecting equipment required by the Swedish Armed Forces.
The investment forms part of wider efforts to strengthen Sweden’s defence-industrial base and reduce vulnerabilities within ammunition supply chains.
Five Companies Receive Government Support
State co-financing has been secured for project applications from EURENCO Bofors, Sweden Ballistics, Norma Precision, Nammo Sweden and JUNGHANS Microtec.
The projects include increased production capacity for propellant charges and fuzes used by the Archer artillery system, alongside small-calibre ammunition and explosives.
The SEK 500 million allocation will come from funding previously approved by the Swedish Parliament for so-called opportunity purchases under the 2025 Spring Amending Budget.
The initiative reflects Sweden’s continued focus on ammunition availability, defence readiness and industrial resilience as European countries seek to expand production capacity and secure more reliable defence supply chains.
