The UK has said it will provide direct defence support to Belgium in response to a recent spike in drone incursions targeting Belgian airspace.

According to multiple reports, the UK has dispatched personnel and equipment after a formal request from Brussels, with the aim of helping address operations that have disrupted airports, military sites and critical infrastructure.

In one instance, drones were sighted near Belgium’s major hubs, including Brussels Airport and Liège Airport, causing flight diversions and temporary closures. The UK’s contribution reportedly involves equipment and specialists drawn from the Royal Air Force’s counter-uncrewed aerial systems unit.

UK Chief of Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton noted that while the origin of the drone operations is not yet confirmed, the UK is willing to support a NATO ally facing “hybrid warfare” threats. Belgium’s Defence Minister Theo Francken described some of the incidents as “a spying operation” rather than random trespass.

Analysis inside Belgium reveals the country is fast-tracking its counter-drone capabilities. Belgium recently announced it will accelerate deployment of detection-to-decision systems, appoint a “drone general”, and link civil and military air-surveillance data. The UK intervention thus complements Belgium’s own reinforced posture.

The support reflects broader concerns across Europe about low-cost unmanned aerial systems used in destabilising ways. The UK Ministry of Defence has also been advancing its own directed-energy and radio-frequency defence systems to counter drone swarms.
