Northrop Grumman has introduced Valen, a new multifunction active electronically scanned array described as a generational advance in sensing technology, aimed at delivering enhanced situational awareness for US and allied forces.
The system expands the company’s advanced sensing portfolio and is designed to provide what it terms a tactical edge across a wide range of crewed and uncrewed platforms operating from air to space.
Combined Architecture
Valen is a wideband array that combines radar, electronic warfare and communications functions within a single architecture. According to the company, the design is lighter, smaller and more affordable than previous systems, while maintaining high performance across multiple mission sets.
Funded entirely by Northrop Grumman, the programme builds on what the company describes as generations of combat proven Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology. The array has been digitally designed and incorporates additive manufacturing, including 3D printing, to reduce production timelines.
The company states that Valen’s performance is underpinned by advanced packaging techniques developed at Northrop Grumman’s Microelectronics Center. These techniques integrate multiple semiconductor components into a single micro sized package, enabling faster operation, improved thermal management and reduced power consumption within a smaller footprint.
Update Capability
Built to the latest open architecture standards, Valen is designed to support rapid hardware and software updates. Northrop Grumman says the approach enables integration of sensor capabilities from across its portfolio, supporting adaptability as operational requirements evolve.
As an AESA system, Valen uses a digitally controlled array of antennas and sensors to deliver rapid detection, tracking and imaging in any direction without mechanical movement, enhancing responsiveness and reliability in contested environments.
