KONGSBERG has secured a NOK 1.1 billion contract from General Dynamics Land Systems–Canada for additional PROTECTOR RS4 Remote Weapon Systems for the Canadian Army.
The systems will be integrated onto Canada’s Armoured Combat Support Vehicle fleet, continuing an established procurement programme under which KONGSBERG has previously supplied RS4 systems for the same platform. The latest contract therefore represents a follow-on order rather than the introduction of a new weapon station into Canadian service.
The procurement adds to Canada’s continuing investment in protected and remotely operated weapon capabilities for its land forces. Remote weapon stations allow crews to operate mounted weapons while remaining within the protection of the vehicle, while also providing sensors that can contribute to observation and target engagement.
Expanding the ACSV fleet
General Dynamics Land Systems–Canada is integrating the PROTECTOR systems as part of the wider ACSV programme. KONGSBERG said previous RS4 units have already been delivered for installation on ACSV vehicles, with the new contract intended to expand the capability across the Canadian Army’s fleet.
The RS4 forms part of KONGSBERG’s wider PROTECTOR Remote Weapon System family. The manufacturer describes the system as being designed to support survivability, precision and operational flexibility across different military vehicle types. It is already operated by defence customers internationally.
For Canada, retaining an existing weapon station across additional vehicles also provides benefits beyond the weapon itself. Common equipment can reduce the requirement for separate operator training, support arrangements and spare inventories as fleets grow.
Kjetil Reiten Myhra, Executive Vice President at KONGSBERG and President of its Defence Systems division, said the order continued the company’s relationship with GDLS-Canada and reflected the RS4’s role within Canada’s modern vehicle fleet.
Remote systems remain a procurement priority
Remote weapon stations have become an established component of protected vehicle design as armed forces seek to improve crew survivability without reducing the ability to observe and engage threats.
The Canadian order also illustrates the importance of modular subsystems within wider armoured vehicle programmes. Procurement is increasingly centred not solely on the base vehicle, but on the sensors, communications, defensive systems and weapon stations integrated onto it.
KONGSBERG’s latest contract consequently represents a continuation of an existing Canadian capability rather than a fundamental change in vehicle armament. Its significance lies in the scale of the follow-on investment and the continued standardisation of remotely operated weapon systems across Canada’s ACSV fleet.
