At Ease with Ade Morley MC

In our Q1 edition of International Defence Buyer, we caught up with Ade Morley MC, Managing Director of Project Selborne to discover more about the personality behind the face.

What does the world of the Defence Industry represent to you?

The defence industry represents service beyond uniform. Having served in the Royal Marines, I see industry as a vital partner in delivering operational advantage. Through Project Selborne with the Royal Navy, we translate innovation into frontline readiness through individual training.

Can you explain more about Project Selborne?

Project Selborne is Capita’s cornerstone training programme. Run as a partnership with the Royal Navy and the Team Fisher consortium, including Elbit Systems UK, it has helped deliver better trained warfighters to the frontline faster. Capita has transitioned 27 individual contracts, streamlining operations across 14 Royal Navy training establishments.

What is your most important tip when it comes to defence training, either as an instructor or trainee?

Training should mirror operational reality. It must be demanding, adaptive and relevant. It’s crucial, to embrace feedback and utilise technology and simulation wisely. The aim is confidence under pressure.

Are there any particular trends in military/defence training that you are seeing today?

We’re seeing a push towards more immersive training, and Project Selborne has seen the implementation of virtual training environments to allow greater opportunities for navigation training. Delivering bridge trainers has allowed access to enhanced simulators for the training of complex ship handling serials and bridge emergencies, ensuring that the Royal Navy can continue to prepare its people for the present and future challenges of the maritime environment.

What has been your most embarrassing moment professionally?

I can’t recall any specific moment.  I tend to rely heavily on my Royal Marines experience, and the values of excellence, integrity, self-discipline and humility. This means I approach each challenge on its own merits.

If you didn’t work in the industry, what do you think you would be doing?

I have worked across the Capita Public Service sector since leaving the Royal Marines, in our Central Government and Local Public Sector businesses, so it would most likely be in a sector where I am continuing to deliver services that improve citizen experience and contribute to wider society.

What is your favourite activity outside of work?

Outside of work most of my spare time is taken up with cycling, running and gardening.

What advice would you give someone looking to enter the military and defence sector?

Be clear about your purpose and be prepared to commit fully. I would say it’s important to seek varied experiences. Whether in uniform or industry, your impact supports those on operations. If you embrace challenge and responsibility, it’s an immensely rewarding career.
