Following the recent removal of Bashar al-Assad, the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) rebel group, Abu Mohammed al Jolani, has addressed a Western audience for the first time since the collapse of Bashar al Assad’s regime.
In an exclusive interview with Sky News in Damascus, al Jolani sought to reassure foreign nations that Syria poses no threat following the regime change. He emphasized that the country is on a path to recovery, saying, “There is no need for concern, God willing. Syria is heading toward rebuilding, development, and stability.”
Speaking to international news editor Zein Jaafar and Middle East producer Celine al Khaldi, al Jolani described the former regime as the root of instability in Syria. “The fear stemmed from the presence of the Assad regime, Iranian militias, and Hezbollah, which were responsible for the atrocities we witnessed,” he said. “Now, with their removal, Syria has a chance for peace.”
He further highlighted the nation’s collective exhaustion after years of conflict. “People are weary of war. Syria is not in a position to endure another conflict, nor does it have any inclination to engage in one,” he asserted. “The era of fear and violence is coming to an end, and we are committed to ensuring that panic does not return.”
Al Jolani’s comments signal a focus on rebuilding and fostering stability, marking a significant shift in Syria’s post-Assad trajectory.
