As we approach the 45th Farnborough International Airshow (FIA), which brings together the international aerospace community, we look at the strong support the airshow has received – as civil aviation continues its post-pandemic recovery – which for the first time in more than a decade is completely sold out.
Within our airshow preview section is a special interview with Farnborough International’s chief executive Gareth Rogers who reflects on the build up to the show, with every indication that it will be another record-breaking event. He looks at sustainability and the defence element, which is going to be more prominent this year with the increasing geopolitical tensions in regions across the world. There is also a look at some of the SME exhibitors participating at the 2024 airshow and what fresh thinking and innovative approaches the pioneers of tomorrow bring and the on going challenge of attracting new talent to the ADS sectors.
The new ADS president David Lockwood, OBE, tells us about his new role and what he brings to the position and the importance of advancing the UK’s interest across all four ADS sectors and we talk to Steve Wadey, QinetiQ’s chief executive, about the power of disruptive innovation and the ambitious path the company is charting.
ADVANCE appraises the three candidates after the final race to fulfil the UK’s requirements for a new medium helicopter has finally started and we delve into the technical challenges involved in the arming of the ‘re-imagined’ Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). With Europe waking up to the new realities in international defence and security we have a special focus on the forthcoming Eurosatory event, where ADS have responded to unprecedented demand and taken two pavilions at the show, which will showcase a range of innovative UK capabilities across the defence and security sectors.
The momentum and optimism behind the new generation of eVTOL aircraft seems unstoppable, however there are signs of cold realism creeping into the picture, so we examine the current state of play. On the green side of aerospace, ADVANCE looks at how the UK’s aviation ecosystem is pushing to make sustainable aviation a reality and see how a British airship is set to pioneer green tourism.
The space domain is difficult to understand, so who better to explain it than the head of UK Space Command, Air Vice – Marshall Paul Godfrey, OBE, plus we have insights into the next-generation of satellites for the UK military from the programme director of Skynet 6 and we consider why Scotland’s space sector is advancing so rapidly.
Our working week feature is with Edward Sharman, head of development at the RAF museum, who outlines his priorities for the future, we gain insights into two studies that are evaluating how to control emmissions in the air and on the ground, we evaluate whether technologies and infrastructure are sufficient to drive the UK’s sustainable aviation ecosystem and we provide our regular summary of news from across the aerospace, defence, security and space sectors.
